The San Mateo County Transit District, located in California’s Silicon Valley, is at the forefront of applying IT to public transportation. It wanted to use technology to improve operations of a complex transportation system and to attract new riders. The district decided to deploy smart card technology to simplify fare payment throughout the San Francisco Bay area, to create a GPS-based system that accurately predicts bus arrivals for passengers waiting at stops, to provide wireless Internet access to riders on high-speed rail lines and to standardize on HP printing and imaging solutions to efficiently meet a wide range of business demands.
